Why Cleanliness Is the Most Important AirBnB Rating
Airbnb guests consistently rate cleanliness as the single most important factor in their booking experience. In guest surveys, cleanliness is ranked above location, value, and check-in experience. This makes sense: guests are sleeping in your bed, using your bathroom, and preparing food in your kitchen. Anything less than spotless feels uncomfortable.
From a business perspective, cleanliness ratings directly affect two revenue levers:
- Search ranking: Airbnb's algorithm explicitly uses cleanliness ratings in listing ranking. Higher cleanliness scores mean more visibility, which means more bookings at any occupancy target.
- Review sentiment: Negative cleanliness reviews are the most damaging review type because they signal to potential guests a health and comfort risk. A single review mentioning “dirty bathroom” or “stained sheets” has an outsized negative effect on conversion.
Calgary-specific consideration: the city's hard water creates white calcium deposits on shower glass and faucets that look dirty to guests who aren't familiar with Calgary's water. Even a recently-cleaned bathroom can receive a low cleanliness score from an out-of-province guest who interprets mineral deposits as dirt. Professional cleaning with proper descaling removes this completely.
