The Complete Spring Deep Cleaning Checklist for Calgary Homes
After a long Calgary winter, your home needs more than a surface wipe. Furnaces have been cycling for months, hard water has been drying on fixtures every day, and salt, sand, and Chinook dust have found their way inside. This spring deep cleaning checklist is built for Calgary homes: what to hit room by room, what often gets skipped, and where it pays to bring in help.
If you want the full service version, we cover spring resets in our spring cleaning in Calgary page and our deeper deep cleaning service. Otherwise, work the list below at your own pace.
Kitchen Deep Clean (Oven, Fridge, Range Hood)
Start with the appliances that collected grease and crumbs all winter.
Pull everything out of the refrigerator. Toss expired items, wipe shelves and drawers with warm soapy water, and clean the drip pan if yours is accessible. Calgary kitchens run dry in winter; check door seals for crumbs that prevent a tight close.
Run a proper oven clean cycle or use a fume appropriate degreaser for your oven type. Remove racks, scrub the door glass inside and out, and wipe the frame where spills bake on. This is one of the longest tasks on any spring deep cleaning checklist, so schedule it when you can ventilate the kitchen.
Degrease the range hood and filter. Metal mesh filters can often soak in hot water and degreaser, then rinse. Wipe cabinet fronts near the stove where invisible grease film builds.
Finish the kitchen with backsplash grout touch ups if needed, sink polish, and a floor mop that gets under movable appliances if you can safely shift them a few inches.
Bathroom Reset (Grout, Exhaust Fans, Fixtures)
Calgary hard water leaves scale on faucets, shower glass, and toilet rims. For light scale, acidic cleaners or citric acid solutions help; for heavy buildup, plan extra time or call a pro who carries descaling products safe for your surfaces. Health Canada publishes guidelines for drinking water quality in Canada that explain why mineral rich water is common here, which is why spring is the right time to reset bathrooms.
Scrub grout lines with a narrow brush and appropriate cleaner. Rinse well so residue does not attract new dirt.
Remove bathroom exhaust fan covers, vacuum dust from the grille and cavity if you can do so safely, and wash the cover. Fans that run all winter move a lot of moist air; clogged fans invite mildew and poor ventilation.
Polish fixtures, clean inside medicine cabinets, and wash or replace shower curtains and liners if they have winter mildew spots.
Living Areas (Baseboards, Window Tracks, Ceiling Fans)
Dust settles all winter while windows stay closed. Work top to bottom: ceiling fans and light fixtures first, then shelves, then baseboards.
Vacuum or wipe baseboards along the full perimeter of each room. Entryways and halls collect the most Calgary road grit; give them extra attention.
Vacuum upholstered furniture and lift cushions. If you have a steam cleaner rated for your fabric, spring is a good time for a pass on high use pieces.
Window tracks fill with dust and dead insects after months of being closed. Vacuum tracks, then wipe with a damp cloth and a narrow tool for corners. When the weather allows, open windows briefly to air out stale winter air as you clean.
Bedrooms (Mattress Refresh, Closet Purge, Dusting)
Strip beds completely. Vacuum the mattress surface, spot treat stains, and if the weather permits, let the mattress air near a window with sunlight. Rotate or flip if your manufacturer allows.
Wash all bedding including mattress protectors and duvet covers. Pillows that are washable should go through on a hot cycle if the label allows.
Closet spring cleaning: remove everything, dust shelves and rods, vacuum the floor, and donate items you did not wear last season. The City of Calgary lists what can go in blue carts and where to take textiles, which helps when you purge responsibly.
Dust blinds, curtain rods, and the tops of door frames. Bedrooms often get skipped in quick cleans; spring is the time to reset them.
Windows and Exterior Entry Points
Clean interior glass with a streak free method you trust. For exterior windows you can reach safely, wash after pollen and dust season calms down if possible; early spring Chinooks can redeposit dust quickly.
Wash interior and storm door glass, polish handles, and clean the threshold where salt and sand collect. Shake out entry mats and replace or deep clean them.
Check weather stripping and door bottoms for salt damage or gaps that let dust in next winter.
When to DIY vs Hire a Professional
DIY works well if you have time, basic supplies, and no health limits on bending, ladders, or strong cleaners. Many Calgary homeowners split the job: they declutter and wash linens themselves, then book a team for oven interior, fridge detail, bathrooms with heavy scale, and whole home floor finishing.
Hire a professional when you are short on time, when hard water has etched glass or grout beyond comfortable DIY, or when you want one visit to reset the home before recurring maintenance. A trained crew brings HEPA vacuums, safe descalers, and the checklist discipline that prevents missed spots.
