Ice Control and Snow Removal Are Not the Same Job

It's a common assumption that booking "snow removal" automatically covers any ice on a driveway too. In practice, snow clearing and ice control are two different problems with two different solutions, and understanding the difference helps you know what to expect from a quote, and what to flag before a crew shows up.

What Standard Snow Removal Covers

A standard snow removal visit clears snow down to the surface, driveway, walkway, and the public sidewalk bordering your property. It's a physical clearing job: plow, shovel, or snowblower pushes loose and packed snow off the surface so it's passable.

This works well on fresh snow, even several inches of it, because snow hasn't bonded to the surface underneath. It comes up cleanly with the right equipment and technique.

Where Ice Comes From (and Why It's Different)

Ice is a different physical problem. It typically forms one of two ways on a Calgary driveway:

1. Compaction. Snow that's driven or walked over repeatedly before it's cleared gets compressed into a hard layer, then that layer partially melts from the pressure and body heat and refreezes into ice bonded directly to the concrete or asphalt.
2. Melt-and-refreeze cycles. Calgary's chinooks are famous for rapid, dramatic temperature swings, a driveway can see melting snow one afternoon and a hard freeze that same night. That cycle, repeated over a winter, is exactly how a thin, near-invisible ice layer builds up on surfaces between snow removal visits.

Once ice has bonded to a surface, it can't be pushed off the way loose snow can. It has to be mechanically chipped, or melted with a chemical ice control product, before the surface is genuinely safe.

Why This Distinction Matters for Pricing

Chipping ice takes real additional time compared to clearing fresh snow of the same visible depth, it's the difference between one clean pass with a plow and a slower, more careful process to break up a bonded layer without damaging the surface underneath. That's why ice buildup is flagged as something that can affect the final price on a snow removal quote, rather than assumed as included in a base per-push rate.

Ice melt (rock salt, calcium chloride, or similar) is a separate product cost on top of the labour, which is why most Calgary snow companies, including Three North Clean, treat basic ice melt application as a small add-on rather than bundling it into every visit by default. Not every driveway needs it, and adding product cost to jobs that don't need it isn't good value for anyone.

What This Means for You

If your driveway or walkway has visible ice underneath the snow, mention it when you book, ideally with a photo. It gets flagged in your estimate as a factor that could affect the final price, which is far better than a surprise on arrival.

In the meantime, if an icy patch is a safety concern before your scheduled clearing, avoid unnecessary foot or vehicle traffic over it (more traffic bonds ice more firmly to the surface) and a light application of sand or ice melt can help with traction until a proper clearing visit.
