Seasonal Contract or Per-Visit? How to Decide for Your Calgary Property

Every Calgary snow removal company quotes one of two ways: a fixed seasonal or monthly price, or a price each time they come out. Both look reasonable on paper. Which one actually costs less depends on a winter nobody can predict in advance, but the math and the trade-offs are worth understanding before you book.

How the Two Models Work

Seasonal or monthly contract. You pay a set amount, typically $150 to $300 a month for a standard residential driveway with Three North Clean, and we come out every time snowfall passes an agreed depth. Your cost is fixed no matter how much it snows that month.

Per visit. You pay each time, usually $50 to $95 for a standard driveway and walkway. You pay nothing in a quiet month, but a heavy-snow month has no ceiling.

The Break-Even Math

Take a standard double driveway: a seasonal contract runs roughly $190–$260 a month, and a per-push visit runs $70–$95. At the midpoint, a $220 contract against an $80 visit, the contract pays for itself at just under three visits in a month.

Calgary regularly exceeds three qualifying snowfalls in its peak winter months (December through February especially), which is exactly why most people who try per-visit pricing for a season end up on a contract the following year. In a genuinely light winter, though, per-visit can come out ahead, you simply pay for what actually falls.

The Scheduling Advantage Most People Miss

Cost isn't the only variable. After a heavy overnight snowfall, every snow removal company in Calgary faces the same surge in demand at once. Companies work through their committed contract routes first, then take one-off per-visit calls as capacity allows.

This matters against Calgary's Street Bylaw, which requires clearing the public sidewalk bordering your property within 24 hours of a snowfall ending, and the clock doesn't pause while you wait for a callback. A per-visit customer calling in during a busy week may not get served before that window closes, while a contract customer is on a route that's built to hit it.

A Cheap Price Isn't Always a Cheaper Service

One thing worth knowing when comparing quotes: a low per-push price that only covers pushing snow, with ice control or sidewalk clearing billed separately, isn't actually cheaper once you add it all back, it's a smaller service.
