7 Signs You Need Professional Drain Cleaning in Calgary

By Sarah Mitchell, Operations Manager — Three North Clean·July 8, 2026·5 min read

Most drain problems don't start as emergencies — they start as small, easy-to-miss signs that get worse over a few days or weeks. Catching them early is almost always cheaper and less disruptive than waiting for a full backup.

---

1. Water Draining Slower Than Usual

This is the earliest and most common sign. A sink, tub, or shower that used to drain quickly now takes noticeably longer, or water pools briefly around your feet before disappearing. It's easy to ignore because the drain still "works" — but a slow drain rarely gets better on its own.

2. Gurgling Sounds From Drains or Toilets

A gurgling noise means air is trapped behind a partial blockage and bubbling back up through standing water. You'll often hear it from a different fixture than the one that's actually clogging — for example, a gurgling toilet when you run the shower.

3. Recurring Clogs in the Same Drain

If the same drain clogs again a few weeks after you clear it — even with a plunger or store-bought drain cleaner — that's a sign the underlying blockage (grease buildup, hair, mineral scale) hasn't actually been removed, just pushed aside temporarily.

4. Multiple Drains Backing Up at Once

When more than one fixture backs up around the same time — the toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains, or the bathtub backs up when you run the kitchen sink — this usually points to a blockage in the main line rather than an individual fixture, since every drain in your home eventually feeds into it.

5. A Bad Smell Coming From a Drain

A persistent sewage or rotten-egg smell from a drain, especially a floor drain, often means organic material (grease, food waste, hair) is trapped and decomposing in the pipe, or that a P-trap has dried out and is letting sewer gas through.

6. Water Pooling Around a Floor Drain

Basement and utility room floor drains are often the first place a main line backup shows up, since they're typically the lowest point in the plumbing system. Water or dampness around a floor drain — even without an obvious flood — is worth investigating quickly.

7. Slow Drainage After Running the Washing Machine or Dishwasher

If your drains slow down or a floor drain backs up specifically when the washing machine or dishwasher empties, it's a sign the main line has limited capacity to handle the extra water volume — usually because of a partial blockage further down the line.

Why Acting Early Saves Money

A slow drain is a $210–$285 fix. A full backup affecting multiple fixtures, or a main line blockage that's been building for weeks, is more likely to need main line snaking at $390 — and in the worst cases, water damage cleanup on top of that. Addressing the early signs is almost always the cheaper path. See our drain cleaning cost guide for full 2026 Calgary pricing, or book a drain cleaning visit directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

The earliest sign is almost always slower-than-normal drainage — water pooling around your feet in the shower, or a sink that takes a few extra seconds to empty. This is the easiest and cheapest stage to address, before the clog fully blocks the line or spreads to other fixtures.
