Carpet Stain Removal Chart, by Stain and by Fibre
Most stain guides tell you what to put on a stain. Very few tell you what that product does to the carpet underneath it. This chart covers 16 stains across 5 fibre types, and gives as much space to what not to do as to what to do.

Red wine on nylon
Tannin and dyeWhat you are dealing with
Two problems together: anthocyanin pigment, which is a pH-sensitive dye, and tannin, which binds to fibre and leaves the shadow after the red is gone.
The method
- Blot immediately with a dry white cloth. Press, do not rub.
- Flush with cool water and keep blotting. Most of a fresh spill leaves with dilution alone.
- Follow with a mildly acidic treatment for the tannin. Judge progress by colour transferring to your cloth, not by what the wet carpet looks like.
- Rinse and blot until the cloth comes up clean, then dry quickly with air movement.
What not to do, and why
- ×Do not pour salt on it. It absorbs a little liquid and leaves hygroscopic salt in the pile that holds moisture and attracts dirt, and Calgary carpet already carries winter chloride.
- ×Do not panic at a colour shift. Anthocyanins are pH indicators and turn blue-grey in alkaline conditions, which looks like damage but says nothing about whether the pigment is leaving.
- ×Do not reach for hydrogen peroxide as a first move. It works, and on a mid-tone or dark carpet it also lightens the fibre permanently.
General cautions for nylon
Also sold as Polyamide. The most common wall-to-wall carpet in Calgary homes, especially bedrooms and main floors.
- •The most forgiving common carpet fibre and the most likely to respond to stain treatment.
- •Dyeable, which cuts both ways: it takes stain treatment well but it can also absorb dye from a spill quickly, so speed matters more on nylon than on polyester.
- •Tolerates hot water extraction and a wide pH range, though strong oxidisers can still strip colour.
One careful attempt is reasonable. Repeated attempts are where this stain type usually becomes permanent. If a stain has already been treated more than once, tell whoever cleans it what was used, because previous attempts change what can safely be applied next. Eight Rules That Apply to Every Stain
These hold regardless of what was spilled or what the carpet is made of. Most stains that become permanent do so because one of these was broken rather than because the wrong product was chosen.
1.Blot, never rub
Rubbing spreads the stain sideways and abrades the fibre at the same time. Abraded fibre is fuzzy, catches light differently, and holds colour more stubbornly afterwards, so a rubbed stain often stays visible even once the substance is gone.
2.Work from the outside inward
Attacking the darkest part first pushes the boundary outward. Starting at the edge contains it. This matters most with anything solvent-based, where a dot readily becomes a blotch.
3.Use white cloths only
You need to see whether colour is still transferring, because that is the only reliable signal of progress and the only reliable signal to stop. A coloured cloth also risks transferring its own dye into damp carpet.
4.Use less liquid than feels right
If the carpet looks wet, you have overshot. Excess liquid carries the stain into the underpad, and anything in the underpad wicks back up to the surface as it dries and reappears a day later.
5.Rinse, and then rinse again
Most stains that come back were never stains coming back. They are residue left behind by the treatment, collecting fresh dirt. In Calgary this is worse than average, because hard water minerals react with cleaning surfactants to form deposits that will not rinse out with more tap water.
6.Test on a hidden area first
Inside a closet, under where furniture sits, or on an offcut. Thirty seconds of testing is the difference between a stain and a bleached patch, and a bleached patch is the more visible of the two.
7.Dry it quickly
Air movement matters more than heat. Calgary's dry air is a genuine advantage, so open a window or run the furnace fan. Slow drying causes wicking, and on rugs it causes cellulosic browning.
8.Know when the answer is stop
Repeated attempts are how most stains become permanent. If two careful passes have not moved it, further attempts with stronger products are far more likely to damage the carpet than to remove the stain.
The Five Fibres, and How to Tell Them Apart
Fibre type is the variable that decides whether a treatment is safe. If you only learn one thing from this page, learn to recognise viscose, because it is the one that gets ruined most often and it is almost never sold under its own name.
Nylon
Also sold as PolyamideThe most common wall-to-wall carpet in Calgary homes, especially bedrooms and main floors.
- •The most forgiving common carpet fibre and the most likely to respond to stain treatment.
- •Dyeable, which cuts both ways: it takes stain treatment well but it can also absorb dye from a spill quickly, so speed matters more on nylon than on polyester.
- •Tolerates hot water extraction and a wide pH range, though strong oxidisers can still strip colour.
Polyester or triexta
Also sold as PET, PTT, SmartStrandCommon in newer builds and mid-range replacement carpet.
- •Resists water-based staining well, so wine and coffee often lift more easily than on nylon.
- •Oil-loving, which is the trade-off. Grease, cooking oil and body oils cling to polyester and are its weak point.
- •Oily soil on polyester needs a solvent-side pre-treatment rather than hotter water.
Olefin
Also sold as Polypropylene, most BerberVery common in Calgary basements, rec rooms and rental units.
- •Bleach resistant, because the colour is locked in during manufacture. Solution-dyed olefin tolerates oxidisers that would ruin other carpet.
- •Low melting point, around 160°C, and it softens near 150°C. A household iron can fuse and glaze it permanently.
- •Holds oily soil badly and flattens permanently under traffic. Neither is reversible by cleaning.
- •Usually a looped construction, so a cut or melted loop can run across the room like a snagged sweater. Never scrape with a blade or a stiff brush.
- •Wicks more than any other common carpet, so use less moisture and extract thoroughly.
Wool
Also sold as Wool blend, wool-richHigher-end wall-to-wall, and the pile on most hand-knotted area rugs.
- •Protein fibre, so it is chemically closer to hair than to plastic and it must be treated as such.
- •Never use hydrogen peroxide, oxygen bleach or chlorine bleach. Oxidisers degrade protein fibre, causing yellowing and permanent damage.
- •Never use high alkalinity. Wool wants neutral to mildly acidic. Strong alkaline cleaners cause colour loss and harsh texture.
- •Felts if agitated while wet, meaning the fibres mat together irreversibly. Blot, do not scrub.
- •Keep temperatures moderate. Hot extraction can shrink and distort wool.
Viscose
Also sold as Rayon, art silk, faux silk, bamboo silk, banana silkArea rugs sold as silk-look. Almost never used in wall-to-wall.
- •Treat almost every wet method as off limits. This is the most commonly ruined rug material and the damage is not reversible.
- •Regenerated cellulose, so behaves more like paper than like wool. It loses roughly half its strength when wet and crushes permanently under any pressure.
- •Yellows as it dries, because lignin in the cellulose oxidises and wicks to the surface.
- •Dries stiff and coarse. Owners describe it as crunchy, and grooming does not restore the original feel.
- •Plain water alone can leave a permanent ring. A dropped glass is enough.
- •Blot spills with a dry white cloth and get specialist low-moisture advice. Do not flush, do not saturate, do not extract.

Red wine

By fibre
- Wool:
- No peroxide and no oxygen bleach. Both are widely recommended for wine and both damage protein fibre. Keep pH neutral to mildly acidic and blot rather than scrub.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Blot with a dry cloth only. Wine on viscose is a specialist job, and flushing it will crush and yellow the rug far more visibly than the wine did.
- Olefin:
- Solution-dyed olefin tolerates oxidisers well, so this is the one fibre where a peroxide-based approach is comparatively low risk. Still test first.
Coffee or tea
TanninUsually fine to treat yourselfTannin pigment, plus milk protein and fat if it was not taken black. Three unrelated chemistries in one spill, which is why one product half-works.
Method
- Blot up as much liquid as possible with a dry white cloth.
- Lift the fat first with a trace of detergent solution, if there was milk or cream in it.
- Treat the protein next, with an enzyme product, if there was dairy.
- Finish with a mildly acidic rinse for the tannin. This order matters, because an alkaline treatment applied first can set the tannin permanently.
- Rinse thoroughly and dry fast.
What not to do
- ×Do not use an alkaline general-purpose cleaner as the first step. It sets tannin.
- ×Do not ignore the dairy. Pigment removal does nothing about the sour smell from casein breaking down, and nothing about the fat that will collect dirt for weeks.
- ×Do not keep rinsing with Calgary tap water when a brown shadow persists. Calcium binds with tannin and surfactant into an insoluble deposit, so more hard water adds mineral rather than removing stain.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Keep it mildly acidic throughout and skip enzyme products formulated at high pH. Moderate temperature only.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Blot dry only.
- Polyester or triexta:
- The dairy fat is the part that will linger on polyester. Expect to need a solvent-side treatment for the greasy component even after the brown has gone.
Blood
ProteinTry once, then stopHaemoglobin, a protein that coagulates with heat and whose iron oxidises to rust brown as it dries.
Method
- Use cold water only, and start immediately. Heat sets protein the way heat sets an egg.
- Blot with a cold, damp white cloth, rotating to clean sections as colour transfers.
- Use an enzyme treatment for anything beyond a fresh small spot, since enzymes break protein down rather than merely diluting it.
- Rinse cold, blot dry, and move air over it.
What not to do
- ×Never use warm or hot water at any stage, including the rinse.
- ×Do not keep reapplying hydrogen peroxide after the foaming stops. The foam is catalase in the blood breaking the peroxide down, and once that is spent you are only wetting the carpet.
- ×Do not let peroxide sit on a mid-tone or dark carpet. It is an oxidiser and will lighten the fibre permanently, trading a brown mark for a pale one.
By fibre
- Wool:
- No peroxide at all. It degrades protein fibre directly, and wool is protein, so you risk damaging the carpet along with the stain.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Blot with a dry cloth and get specialist advice.
Pet urine
Protein and saltsTry once, then stopUrea, urobilin pigment, and uric acid, which crystallises. Those crystals keep releasing odour as they absorb humidity, which is why the smell returns in damp weather.
Method
- Blot fresh accidents heavily. Volume removed now is odour avoided later.
- Flush with cool water and extract, then repeat. Urine spreads wider in the underpad than it appears on the surface.
- Use an enzyme treatment specifically, and give it the dwell time on the label. Enzymes are the only common treatment that breaks uric acid down.
- Dry thoroughly. Residual moisture in the pad is what turns one accident into a recurring smell.
What not to do
- ×Do not use an ammonia-based cleaner. Urine already smells of ammonia, and to a dog that reads as a marked spot, which invites repeat accidents in the same place.
- ×Do not rely on deodorising sprays or baking soda alone. Masking does not touch uric acid crystals, and the smell returns whenever indoor humidity rises.
- ×Do not assume a surface clean resolved it. If urine reached the underpad, surface treatment cannot, and the odour will come back.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Urine is particularly damaging to wool, because it is alkaline and wool is pH sensitive. Act fast and use wool-safe products, since dye loss from a urine spot is common and permanent.
- Viscose:
- Stop. This is one of the few cases where a viscose rug may need to be written off, and a specialist should make that call rather than a cleaning attempt.
- Olefin:
- Berber wicks badly, so urine spreads further through the backing than the visible spot suggests. Treat a wider area than looks necessary.
Vomit
Protein and acidTry once, then stopProtein and food matter combined with stomach acid, so it is both a staining problem and an active fibre and dye risk while it sits.
Method
- Remove solids first with a spoon or dull scraper, working inward.
- Blot the liquid, then flush with cool water to dilute the acid quickly. Time matters here because the acid is doing damage while it sits.
- Apply an enzyme treatment for the protein.
- Rinse, extract and dry fast.
What not to do
- ×Do not leave it to deal with later. Stomach acid causes dye loss, and once the colour is gone from the fibre no cleaning brings it back.
- ×Do not use hot water, since the protein component sets the same way blood does.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Acid damage and dye loss are fastest on wool. Flush immediately with cool water even before finding a product.
- Viscose:
- Stop, but do remove solids and blot. Then get specialist help quickly, because the acid will keep working.
Grease or cooking oil
Oil-basedTry once, then stopOily soil that needs either solvent action or surfactant micelles to lift, plus heat. Invisible at first and darkens over weeks as it collects dry soil.
Method
- Absorb what is on the surface with cornstarch or baking soda, leave it to draw the oil, then vacuum.
- Use a solvent-side spotter, or a very small amount of detergent solution.
- Rinse with clear water repeatedly and blot until a pressed white cloth comes up with no slipperiness or foam.
- Dry with air movement.
What not to do
- ×Do not use dish soap generously. It is designed to be rinsed under a running tap, and carpet has no tap. The surfactant left behind has an oil-attracting end that goes on collecting soil, which is why the mark returns weeks later larger than the original.
- ×Do not skip the rinse. On a grease stain the rinse matters more than the cleaner.
- ×Do not keep re-treating with tap water in the south of Calgary. Anionic surfactant plus hard water calcium forms an insoluble soap, the same reaction as a bathtub ring, and each attempt adds more deposit.
By fibre
- Polyester or triexta:
- Polyester is oil-loving, so this is its worst stain type. Expect a solvent-side treatment to be necessary rather than optional, and expect a faint shadow to persist.
- Olefin:
- Olefin holds oily soil badly for the same reason. A grease mark on Berber often needs professional treatment to fully clear.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Absorb with cornstarch, vacuum, and get specialist advice. Do not apply liquid.
Candle wax
WaxTry once, then stopA hydrocarbon solid that melts around 46 to 68°C, plus dye if the candle was coloured. The dye is a separate problem from the wax.
Method
- Let it harden completely, then break it up and lift as much as possible with a dull edge.
- Cover with a plain paper bag or cloth and use an iron on its lowest setting, no steam, kept moving, to draw the wax up into the paper.
- Change to a clean section of paper often, and stop as soon as wax stops transferring.
- Treat the oily film left behind with a solvent-side spotter, since wax residue attracts soil exactly like grease.
What not to do
- ×Do not turn the iron up. Paraffin needs very little heat and synthetic carpet softens far closer to that than people assume. Overshooting fuses and glazes the fibre, and melted carpet cannot be repaired, only replaced.
- ×Do not scrape with a knife or a stiff brush, particularly on looped carpet, where a cut loop can run across the room.
- ×Do not stop at the visible wax. The invisible oily film is what turns the spot grey over the following months.
By fibre
- Olefin:
- Highest risk fibre for this method. Olefin softens near 150°C and melts around 160°C, while an iron on its lowest setting is often already 100 to 120°C and on a linen setting exceeds 200°C. Berber is also looped, so it can run. If the carpet is Berber, this is worth handing over.
- Wool:
- Wool tolerates the heat better than synthetics but scorches and felts, and coloured wax dye on wool cannot be treated with oxidisers. Low heat, no agitation.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Lift hardened wax gently by hand and get specialist advice. Heat plus pressure on viscose crushes the pile permanently.
Ballpoint ink
Solvent dyeTry once, then stopDye suspended in an oil or glycol-based paste, which is why water does nothing and solvent is required.
Method
- Dampen a white cloth with isopropyl alcohol at 70 per cent or higher. Do not apply it to the carpet directly.
- Press and hold briefly, then blot, rotating to a clean part of the cloth each time.
- Work from the outer edge of the mark inward, to contain the boundary.
- Repeat patiently, expecting ten or more cycles, then rinse lightly with cool water and blot dry.
What not to do
- ×Do not use hairspray. That advice is decades out of date. Older formulations were mostly alcohol and the alcohol did the work, while modern hairspray is largely polymer resin, which stays in the fibre and attracts soil around the mark you failed to remove.
- ×Do not use much solvent. If the carpet looks wet, the dissolved ink is already travelling outward and a dot is becoming a blotch.
- ×Do not rub. It spreads dye sideways and abrades fibre, and abraded fibre holds colour more stubbornly.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Solvent on wool needs care and a test first. Keep contact brief.
- Viscose:
- Stop. Solvent and moisture both damage viscose, and ink on a viscose rug is a specialist job.
- Nylon:
- Nylon is dyeable, which means it accepts ink readily. Treat quickly, and test the alcohol on a hidden area first, since some acid-dyed nylon can lose colour to solvent.
Permanent marker
Solvent dyeGet advice before treatingSolvent-based dye engineered to resist water and bond to surfaces. It is doing exactly what it was designed to do.
Method
- Test isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated solvent spotter on a hidden area first.
- Apply to a cloth, blot from the outside in, and rotate to clean cloth constantly.
- Prefer many light applications over one aggressive attempt.
- Rinse and blot dry when colour stops transferring.
What not to do
- ×Do not expect full removal, and be wary of anyone who promises it. Partial reduction is the normal outcome and a shadow usually remains on light carpet.
- ×Do not escalate to strong oxidisers on your own. They can remove the marker and the carpet's own dye at the same time, leaving a pale patch that is more visible than the original mark.
By fibre
- Wool:
- No oxidisers. That removes the main escalation option, so professional assessment is worth it before anything aggressive.
- Viscose:
- Stop entirely.
- Olefin:
- Solution-dyed olefin is the best case here, since it resists bleaching, so a professional has more room to work with reducing and oxidising agents.
Printer toner
Dry powderGet advice before treatingNot ink at all. A dry thermoplastic powder with pigment and iron oxide, designed to be fused onto paper with heat.
Method
- Do not touch it. Vacuum first, with the hose end held slightly above the pile so you lift powder by airflow.
- No beater bar, no brushing, no pressing down.
- Work from the outside inward.
- Only after all loose powder is gone, treat any remaining mark with cold water.
What not to do
- ×Never wet it first. Water or solvent turns loose powder sitting on the carpet into a plastic and pigment paste bonded into the fibre, and that change is effectively irreversible.
- ×Never use heat, warm water or a steam cleaner. Toner is formulated to fuse when warm.
- ×Do not vacuum without sealed filtration. Toner particles are a few microns across, so a vacuum without a HEPA filter collects it at the floor and exhausts it into the room, spreading the problem over a wider area and into the air.
By fibre
- Viscose:
- Stop. Vacuum gently if you can do so without pressure, and nothing else.
- Nylon:
- In a Calgary winter, low indoor humidity of 15 to 25 per cent means carpet holds a strong static charge, and charged toner clings to individual fibres and resists vacuuming. Raising room humidity for half an hour first genuinely helps. Damp air is fine, damp carpet is not.
Road salt and de-icer
Mineral saltUsually fine to treat yourselfSodium chloride, which dries to a white crystalline bloom, or calcium chloride, which is deliquescent and stays permanently damp. Calgary also spreads a traction mix that is 97 per cent six-millimetre gravel.
Method
- Vacuum thoroughly while completely dry, with multiple slow passes from different directions.
- Flush with warm water rather than spot-treating. Salt is highly soluble, so this is a dilution problem.
- Add mild acid, roughly one part white vinegar to five parts warm water, to neutralise the alkaline bloom.
- Extract far more than feels necessary, then dry quickly.
What not to do
- ×Do not wet it before vacuuming. Wetting grit-laden carpet turns abrasive particles into a slurry driven deeper into the pile and backing, where they keep cutting fibre for years.
- ×Do not wet it without the means to extract it. You will dissolve the salt and move it into the underpad, from where it wicks back to the surface as it dries. That is why the white haze keeps coming back.
- ×Do not expect cleaning to fix abrasion. Gravel-worn, permanently flattened entryway fibre does not stand back up.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Salt is alkaline in solution and wool is pH sensitive, so the acidic rinse matters more here, and improvised strength is a bad idea.
- Olefin:
- Berber in a Calgary entryway is the worst combination, since olefin flattens permanently under traffic and grit accelerates it. Protect it with matting rather than relying on cleaning.
- Viscose:
- Stop. A viscose rug should not be in a Calgary entryway at all.
Mud and dirt
ParticulateUsually fine to treat yourselfMostly mineral particulate rather than a chemical stain, which makes it the easiest thing on this chart and the most commonly mishandled.
Method
- Let it dry completely. This feels wrong and it is the single most useful instruction here.
- Break up the dried soil and vacuum it out thoroughly.
- Only then treat any remaining discolouration with a detergent solution.
- Rinse and blot.
What not to do
- ×Do not attack it while wet. Rubbing wet mud drives fine particulate deep into the pile and backing and spreads a small mark into a large grey one. Almost all of it vacuums out once dry.
- ×Do not scrub. Mineral grit under pressure is an abrasive against your own carpet fibre.
By fibre
- Viscose:
- Let it dry, vacuum with no pressure, and stop there.
Chocolate
CombinationUsually fine to treat yourselfFat, milk protein, sugar and tannin from cocoa solids, so it needs the same layered approach as a milky coffee.
Method
- Let it harden, then lift the solids with a dull edge.
- Treat the fat with a small amount of detergent or a solvent-side spotter.
- Treat the protein with an enzyme product.
- Finish mildly acidic for the cocoa tannin, then rinse and dry.
What not to do
- ×Do not use hot water, since the protein sets.
- ×Do not treat it as a simple brown stain. Removing the colour while leaving the fat behind gives you a spot that darkens again over the following weeks.
By fibre
- Wool:
- Mildly acidic, moderate temperature, no oxidisers.
- Viscose:
- Stop after removing the hardened solids.
Nail polish
Polymer in solventGet advice before treatingNitrocellulose polymer with pigment, dissolved in a solvent. Once the solvent evaporates the polymer is a hardened plastic film locked around the fibres.
Method
- Blot fresh spills immediately without spreading, using a dry cloth from the outside in.
- Test acetone-free nail polish remover on a hidden area first.
- Apply to a cloth in small amounts and blot repeatedly, rotating to clean cloth.
- Rinse and blot dry.
What not to do
- ×Do not use acetone on carpet without testing. Acetone dissolves several synthetic fibres outright, including acetate and some blends, and can melt or craze the carpet itself. You can put a hole in the floor covering.
- ×Do not flood it. Solvent carries the dissolved pigment outward and a drop becomes a patch.
By fibre
- Viscose:
- Stop entirely.
- Wool:
- Test carefully and keep contact brief. Solvent plus agitation risks felting.
- Olefin:
- Solvent risk is real on olefin, and once polish has hardened into a looped Berber pile, removal often takes fibre with it.
Chewing gum
ElastomerUsually fine to treat yourselfA synthetic rubber base that is sticky and pliable at room temperature and brittle when very cold.
Method
- Freeze it hard with an ice pack in a bag, giving it several minutes.
- Shatter and lift the brittle pieces with a dull edge, working from the edges in.
- Treat any remaining tacky residue with a solvent-side spotter, since gum base is oil soluble.
- Rinse lightly and blot.
What not to do
- ×Do not pull at warm gum. It stretches, coats more fibres than it started on, and can pull tufts out of the backing.
- ×Do not apply heat to soften it. That drives it deeper into the pile.
By fibre
- Olefin:
- Take particular care with the scraping stage on looped Berber, since pulling a loop can cause a run.
- Viscose:
- Freeze and lift gently only. No solvent.
Rust
MineralGet advice before treatingIron oxide, usually transferred from furniture glides, metal legs standing on damp carpet, or plant pots. It is a metal deposit rather than a conventional stain.
Method
- Identify and remove the source, otherwise it returns.
- Use a rust remover made for carpet, which works by chemically reducing the iron rather than lifting it.
- Follow the product's rinse instructions carefully.
- Dry thoroughly and put a barrier under the offending furniture leg.
What not to do
- ×Do not use a general-purpose cleaner and expect progress. Rust does not respond to detergent, because the problem is a metal compound bonded to the fibre.
- ×Do not use a bathroom or masonry rust remover. Those are typically strong acids and will strip carpet dye and can damage fibre.

Why Stains Behave Differently in Calgary
Two local conditions change stain outcomes here, and neither appears in general advice written for elsewhere.
Hard water. Calgary draws from two treatment plants. Bearspaw serves broadly the north and northwest at roughly 141 to 200 mg/L of hardness, and Glenmore serves broadly the south and southeast at roughly 181 to 274 mg/L, averaging around 224 mg/L through 2025. Anything above 180 mg/L is classed as very hard. Calcium and magnesium in that water react with the surfactants in cleaning products to form insoluble deposits that will not rinse out, leaving a tacky film in the pile that attracts soil. It is the most common reason a stain appears to come back, and in most of those cases it is not the stain returning at all but new dirt collecting on leftover residue. Dry air. Indoor humidity in a Calgary winter regularly sits between 15 and 25 per cent with the furnace running. That shortens the working window on anything that sets as it dries, blood most of all, which can be visibly browning within twenty minutes rather than the hour general guides assume. The same dry air generates strong static in carpet, which is why fine powders such as printer toner cling to fibres and resist vacuuming here more than they would in a humid house.
