Carpet Cleaning in Marda Loop and Altadore, SW Calgary

Marda Loop and Altadore are unusual because the housing stock is genuinely mixed rather than uniform. A post-war bungalow from the 1950s can sit directly beside a three-storey infill finished last year, and from a carpet cleaning point of view they are opposite problems.

The infill is straightforward: hard flooring on the main level, carpet in the upper bedrooms and often the basement, all of it new and predictable. The bungalow is where the interesting risks are, and the biggest one is invisible until you lift a corner.

A great many post-war Calgary bungalows were built with oak hardwood throughout, and a great many of them had carpet laid directly over that hardwood in the decades since, either broadloom tacked down or carpet over a thin pad. In Altadore and the streets around Marda Loop this is common enough that we check for it as a matter of routine.

It matters because wet cleaning carpet that sits on hardwood is a different risk calculation from wet cleaning carpet over a modern underpad and subfloor. Moisture that passes through the carpet backing has nowhere to go, and it sits against wood that may be seventy years old with original finish. Hardwood absorbs moisture from below and responds by cupping, where board edges rise above their centres, and the finish can blush or lift. Older carpet backings and jute pads make this worse, because they hold water rather than letting it pass.

So the approach changes. We use less moisture, extract considerably more thoroughly, and dry aggressively with air movement. Where the carpet is in poor condition anyway, we will often say plainly that the better outcome is to pull it up and look at the hardwood underneath, because a lot of Altadore homeowners are sitting on a floor worth refinishing without knowing it. That is not work we do, but it is worth knowing before spending money cleaning carpet you may not want to keep.

The other bungalow-specific find is original wool carpet, most often on stairs and in bedrooms. Wool from that era can be in remarkably good condition, and it needs moderate temperatures, a neutral to mildly acidic solution, no oxidisers, and blotting rather than agitation, since wool felts irreversibly if worked while wet.

Inner-city Calgary creates practical constraints that suburban work does not, and in Marda Loop and Altadore they are worth planning around rather than discovering on the day.

Lots are narrow and many bungalows have a single-width driveway or none at all, with parking on the street. Where we would normally park close and run a short hose, an Altadore job can mean a longer run from the street, and on a busy stretch near 33rd Avenue during business hours finding a spot at all takes time. If you have a driveway or a back lane pad that we can use, mentioning it when you book genuinely speeds the visit up.

Infills bring their own version of this. Three storeys means hauling equipment up two flights to reach the bedrooms, and the front entrances are often narrow with a hard turn at the bottom of the stairs. None of it is a problem, it simply takes longer than a bungalow of the same square footage, which is why we quote on rooms and access rather than floor area alone.

One small thing that saves everybody trouble: after any carpet clean, keep metal and wooden furniture legs off the damp carpet until it is fully dry. Metal glides on damp carpet are how most rust marks appear, and wooden legs can bleed stain into wet pile. In smaller bungalow bedrooms where furniture has to go somewhere, it is worth planning where before we start.
