Carpet Cleaning in Marda Loop and Altadore, SW Calgary
Two houses on the same Altadore street can need completely different treatment. A 1955 bungalow and the infill next door have almost nothing in common underfoot.

Marda Loop and Altadore are unusual because the housing stock is genuinely mixed rather than uniform. A post-war bungalow from the 1950s can sit directly beside a three-storey infill finished last year, and from a carpet cleaning point of view they are opposite problems.
The infill is straightforward: hard flooring on the main level, carpet in the upper bedrooms and often the basement, all of it new and predictable. The bungalow is where the interesting risks are, and the biggest one is invisible until you lift a corner.
The Bungalow Problem: Carpet Over Original Hardwood
A great many post-war Calgary bungalows were built with oak hardwood throughout, and a great many of them had carpet laid directly over that hardwood in the decades since, either broadloom tacked down or carpet over a thin pad. In Altadore and the streets around Marda Loop this is common enough that we check for it as a matter of routine.
It matters because wet cleaning carpet that sits on hardwood is a different risk calculation from wet cleaning carpet over a modern underpad and subfloor. Moisture that passes through the carpet backing has nowhere to go, and it sits against wood that may be seventy years old with original finish. Hardwood absorbs moisture from below and responds by cupping, where board edges rise above their centres, and the finish can blush or lift. Older carpet backings and jute pads make this worse, because they hold water rather than letting it pass.
So the approach changes. We use less moisture, extract considerably more thoroughly, and dry aggressively with air movement. Where the carpet is in poor condition anyway, we will often say plainly that the better outcome is to pull it up and look at the hardwood underneath, because a lot of Altadore homeowners are sitting on a floor worth refinishing without knowing it. That is not work we do, but it is worth knowing before spending money cleaning carpet you may not want to keep.
The other bungalow-specific find is original wool carpet, most often on stairs and in bedrooms. Wool from that era can be in remarkably good condition, and it needs moderate temperatures, a neutral to mildly acidic solution, no oxidisers, and blotting rather than agitation, since wool felts irreversibly if worked while wet.
What We Usually Find in Marda Loop and Altadore
Fibre type decides the method, so we identify it before choosing a solution. This is the pattern in most Marda Loop and Altadore homes, though we confirm rather than assume.
Bungalow, carpet over original hardwood
Older nylon or original woolThe highest-risk situation in the community. Low moisture, thorough extraction, aggressive drying, and an honest conversation about whether keeping the carpet is the right call.
Bungalow stairs
Frequently original woolNo oxidisers, moderate temperature, no agitation while wet.
Infill upper bedrooms
Modern builder-grade nylon or polyesterStraightforward hot water extraction. Polyester needs solvent-side treatment for oily soil rather than more heat.
Infill basement
Nylon or olefinSlower to dry over a slab, so scheduled first in a whole-home visit.

Narrow Lots, Street Parking and Hose Runs
Inner-city Calgary creates practical constraints that suburban work does not, and in Marda Loop and Altadore they are worth planning around rather than discovering on the day.
Lots are narrow and many bungalows have a single-width driveway or none at all, with parking on the street. Where we would normally park close and run a short hose, an Altadore job can mean a longer run from the street, and on a busy stretch near 33rd Avenue during business hours finding a spot at all takes time. If you have a driveway or a back lane pad that we can use, mentioning it when you book genuinely speeds the visit up.
Infills bring their own version of this. Three storeys means hauling equipment up two flights to reach the bedrooms, and the front entrances are often narrow with a hard turn at the bottom of the stairs. None of it is a problem, it simply takes longer than a bungalow of the same square footage, which is why we quote on rooms and access rather than floor area alone.
One small thing that saves everybody trouble: after any carpet clean, keep metal and wooden furniture legs off the damp carpet until it is fully dry. Metal glides on damp carpet are how most rust marks appear, and wooden legs can bleed stain into wet pile. In smaller bungalow bedrooms where furniture has to go somewhere, it is worth planning where before we start.
Marda Loop and Altadore Is on Glenmore Water
Marda Loop and Altadore are supplied by the Glenmore plant, at roughly 181 to 274 mg/L, which is classed as very hard.
In older homes this compounds a problem that is already there. Decades of cleaning with whatever was to hand tends to leave a legacy of surfactant and mineral residue in the pile, and each subsequent clean with hard water and no chelating agent adds to it. It is why some older carpet looks dull no matter how often it is cleaned. Breaking that down needs a chelated pre-spray and an acidic rinse rather than simply more water, and on a carpet with that history the first clean sometimes produces a bigger improvement than the owner expects.
The wider problem is covered in our guide to Calgary hard water and cleaning, and the pricing detail in our Calgary carpet cleaning cost guide.

Carpet Cleaning in Marda Loop and Altadore: Common Questions
I have carpet over hardwood in my Altadore bungalow. Can it be cleaned safely?+
Yes, but it needs a deliberately different approach and it is worth telling us in advance. Moisture passing through the carpet backing has nowhere to evaporate and sits against wood that may be seventy years old, which can cause cupping where board edges rise above their centres, and can blush or lift older finish. We use less moisture, extract far more thoroughly, and dry with strong air movement. Where the carpet is in poor shape anyway, we will tell you honestly that lifting it may be the better option.
Should I pull up the carpet and refinish the hardwood underneath instead?+
It is worth investigating before spending money on cleaning. A lot of post-war Calgary bungalows have oak hardwood under carpet laid decades later, and in many cases it is in better condition than the owner expects because the carpet protected it. Lift a corner in an inconspicuous spot and look. Refinishing is not work we do, so we have no interest either way, but we would rather you knew before paying us to clean carpet you may not want to keep.
Is the old wool carpet on my bungalow stairs worth cleaning?+
Often yes. Wool from that era was frequently good quality and can be in far better condition than its age suggests. It does need specific handling: moderate temperature rather than hot, a neutral to mildly acidic solution, no hydrogen peroxide or oxygen bleach since oxidisers degrade protein fibre, and blotting rather than scrubbing, because wool felts irreversibly if agitated while wet. Stairs also wear faster than any other carpet in a house, so we assess whether the issue is soil or abrasion first.
Is parking a problem for carpet cleaning in Marda Loop?+
It can be, particularly on the streets close to 33rd Avenue during business hours. Narrow lots mean many homes have a single-width driveway or none, so we sometimes work from a longer hose run off the street. It is not an obstacle, it just takes longer to set up. If you have a driveway or a back lane pad we can use, telling us when you book makes the visit noticeably quicker.
Do you charge more for a three-storey infill?+
Not as a surcharge, but access affects the quote in the same way room count does. Carrying equipment up two flights in a narrow infill entrance takes longer than the same square footage in a bungalow, so we price on rooms and access rather than floor area alone. You will get the figure before we start, not afterwards.
