Carpet Cleaning in Tuscany, NW Calgary

Tuscany was built between roughly 1994 and 2007, which makes it one of the more interesting communities in Calgary to clean carpet in. A lot of the original installs are still down, which means we are frequently working on carpet that is twenty to thirty years old.

That leads to a conversation we have here more than anywhere else, and it is worth being straight about. Sometimes the answer is that cleaning will not fix it. Carpet has two kinds of problem: it is dirty, which we can resolve, or the fibre has been mechanically worn and permanently flattened, which we cannot. We would rather assess it and tell you it is past saving than take the booking and hand you a disappointment.

The good news, and it genuinely surprises people, is that a lot of Tuscany carpet cleans up better than newer carpet does.

Carpet specification changed over the last twenty-five years, and not entirely for the better. A mid-1990s or early-2000s install in a Tuscany family home was frequently a heavier-weight nylon with a denser twist than what goes into a comparable new build today, where thinner nylon and polyester are more common at the builder-grade level.

Heavier nylon has more fibre to clean and holds its structure better through extraction, so a well-maintained twenty-five year old Tuscany bedroom carpet can come back looking remarkably good. What separates the carpet worth cleaning from the carpet worth replacing is almost never age. It is whether the traffic lanes have been mechanically abraded and crushed. Run your hand across a hallway and then across a bedroom corner that furniture has always covered. If the pile in the corner stands up and the hallway does not, that difference is wear, and no cleaning process reverses it.

Tuscany also has a high proportion of walkout basements, because much of the community sits on the escarpment above Twelve Mile Coulee. A walkout changes the traffic pattern of a house completely. Instead of one or two entrances upstairs, there is a door at grade opening straight onto the yard, and that door is used constantly in summer. Walkout basement carpet in Tuscany usually shows more soil than the upstairs bedrooms, which is the reverse of the pattern in most Calgary homes.

Tuscany backs onto Twelve Mile Coulee and has an unusually good pathway network, which is one of the best things about living there and the main reason its carpet gets muddy. Between the pathways, the off-leash areas and the ravine, dogs and boots come home dirty for most of the year.

The most useful thing we can tell Tuscany households about mud is counterintuitive: leave it alone. Mud is mostly mineral particulate rather than a chemical stain. Attacking it while wet drives fine particles deep into the pile and the backing, and turns a small mark into a large grey one that is far harder to remove. Let it dry completely, break it up, then vacuum it thoroughly. Most of it will lift. Only then treat whatever discolouration remains.

The corollary is that a good vacuum matters more in Tuscany than a good spot cleaner. Mineral grit sitting in carpet is an abrasive, and every step grinds it against the fibre. Removing it before it gets walked in is the whole game, and it is why the hallways wear out first.
